Inimitability…

The most powerful line in Hamilton is during Leslie Odam Jr.’s singing of Wait For It. The line goes, “I am the one thing in life I can control/I am inimitable, I am an original.” The truth and self-belief in the way he delivers that one line makes the show.

For one, understanding that the only thing you can control in life is completely freeing. It’s paradoxical. But it’s freeing. Sometimes our lives feel so out of control because of the people in our lives that we try to control everyone around us just to gain some sense of stability because of the chaos they bring. And it’s never someone you don’t love. It’s the people you love who bring the crazy 99% of the time.

Here’s the thing. You have to give up control. Because the second you try to control someone else is the same second that you lose control of yourself. And that’s difficult because toxic people are so out of control. Yet you love them, so they are hard to let go.

I am inimitable. I am an original.

These are the most beautiful affirmations you can say to yourself. Because it’s the one thing that is 100% true. Even when you copy something, it’s still you. You saw something cute on Pinterest and so you tried it and failed so miserably you could be on Nailed It. That’s all you. It’s all hilariously you.

It’s when you actually believe that you yourself can’t be recreated where you can finally become your authentic self.
